Susan Friedman is an award-winning documentary filmmaker( Videographer)  and photographer.

 

In 1985 she won the SECA award in Filmmaking from SFMOMA for two of her films.  Her work has been funded by the National Science Foundation, The National Endowment for the Arts, Fleishacker Foundation and The Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics Zellerbach Foundation, Pacific Islanders in Communication among others.

 

Many of her films have been aired on PBS. Ki Ho Alu: That’s Slack Key Guitar  which she produced and directed on Hawaiian slack-key guitar captured Best Documentary in the Hawaiian International Film Festival in 2001.  This film also received a Special Jury Award at the National Educational Film Festival and a Golden Gate Award at the San Francisco International Film Festival. Her credits also include a Grammy-winning documentary on the making of an MC Hammer music video.

What’s Up in the Universe?,  which aired on PBS for 3 years takes its viewers on a unique expedition of discovery by blending art, science, and metaphor as a technique for explaining the increasingly complex concepts of modern astronomy.

 

Friedman has been a still photographer for many years and has had one-women shows both nationally and internationally, including Tokyo, Amsterdam, Berlin, France and San Francisco. Her book of documentary photographs for the Sierra Club, A Separate Place, was published in 1974.  Her work is collected by the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Oakland Museum, and the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris.

 

Between 2007-2013  Friedman had major shows of her new work Equus with horses: Cordon Potts Gallery at 49 Geary in San Francisco. Mumm Winery in NAPA, Museum of Modern Art ( MOMA) Café Museo, Spur Gallery in Portola Valley,  SF MOMA Artist’s Gallery and IWolk Gallery in St Helena.

 

She has been on the faculty in the Art Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz for 28 years.
